Compression Molding (thermoforming/vacuum forming and blow molding) - Manufacturing EngineerIndependence/Brecksville OH areaImmediate opening for a problem-solving Compression Molding Engineer. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Compression Molding Engineer will lead the development of new compression molding related technology for state of the art molding operations for gradient refractive index nanolayered (GRIN) polymer optics.The Compression Molding Engineer will develop technology for the forming of gradient refractive index polymers and lead the identification, testing, acquisition, installation and troubleshooting of related process equipment. These processes include compression molding, thermoforming, vacuum forming and blow molding.Company is focused on developing and delivering innovative, disruptive solutions to the optical lens market. The Compression Molding Engineer will work closely with R&D Development and Manufacturing leadership to ensure high quality, efficient production of gradient refractive index lens preforms. This key position will assume responsibility for the development of reproducible, dimensionally accurate preforms with gradient refractive index material properties for the use in polymer optical lenses.Key Responsibilities: Lead the development of a compression molding process for transparent polymers with gradient material properties. Design and commission compression molding tooling to accommodate new customer prototypes and process development efforts. Create 3D models and prints to support fabrication and metrology activities. Apply rigorous, disciplined application of the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving. Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses. Develop and implement diagnostic instrumentation of equipment and processes to troubleshoot equipment and process failures. Serve on multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input, and deliver results aligned with team deliverables. Understand and leverage custom and conventional optical and dimensional metrology tools to evaluate process capability. Connect the optical performance of gradient refractive index polymer optics with real-world process variables. Install and commission new equipment and tooling for several forming operations including compression molding, thermoforming, vacuum forming, blow molding. Serve as a coach and provide constructive advice on projects within the team. Use skills and competencies to increase productivity of self and others. Develop and implement engineering project plans. Recommend / develop upgrades to technology and processes. Understand and implement appropriate EH&S standards, policies, and procedures applicable to operation of forming equipment. Promote safe work habits and lead by example in compliance with EH&S standards. Lead continuous improvement projects.Required Qualifications: 1. Minimum of 3+ years' experience in a technical role in the plastics industry.2. Minimum of 5+ years' experience in a highly technical engineering or research role in industry and/or graduate studies.3. Experience with plastics forming tool design, fabrication & commissioning.4. Hands-on operation of plastics forming equipment such as: compression molding, injection molding, blow molding, vacuum forming, thermoforming, extrusion.5. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.6. Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.7. Ability to communicate effectively and develop solutions with a cross-functional team.8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.9. Passionate about plastic conversion processes.10. Passionate about new technology development.Preferred Qualifications Strong mechanical design background, including 3D-modeling, manufacturing drawings and GD&T. Specific experience with SolidWorks a plus. Experience utilizing simulation software to model plastics forming processes or optimize tool design. Experience working in a high precision manufacturing environment - especially plastic or glass optics. Exposure to precision dimensional and optical metrology test methods and equipment. Examples include: CMM, white light interferometry, polarimetry, chromatic confocal microscopy. Demonstrated track record of utilizing statistical tools to solve complex problems. Understanding of polymer chemistry and rheology. Graduate-level studies in physics, engineering, or material science a plus. Demonstrated track record of successful manufacturing start-up and new process development experience. Experience working closely with a cross-functional technical team. Experience working in a technology start-up environment.Education Required: BS in Mechanical Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering. Special consideration given to candidates with graduate degrees in these fields.
